What are superfoods?

​

Superfoods are foods that have a very high nutritional density. This means that they provide us with a substantial amount of nutrients and very few calories. some examples are;  berries, algae, seeds, grains, vegetables and fruits. These foods contain a large percentage of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and antioxidants. Unlike most healthy foods, which normally contain two or three particular nutritional properties, superfoods often have 12 or more.

Im not a huge fan of vegetables or fruits, but I of course eat them on the daily basis because I know how beneficial they are for me.However, I found Unicornsuperfoods! My current favorite brand based out of Australia founded by two twins who have an undeniable love for health, travel and fitness. Unicorn superfoods has all the raw, natural, nutritional goodness of my not so favorite superfoods ground into perfectly palatable powders that can be added to juice, smoothies, soups, sauces, yogurt, ice cream and even baked goods. That being said, including superfoods in a powder form as part of daily nutritional intake is great but only when consuming a healthy, balanced diet overall.

This smoothie bowl has become my favorite sweet treat during Whole30, but Because of its high sugar content, I only have it once or twice a week.

I like to use bananas as a main ingredient  because they create a really nice creamy texture. Although, you can get really creative and use frozen beets, strawberries, or even frozen cauliflower. The key to a creamy texture is to freeze your base or main ingredient prior to making your glorious smoothie.

Unicorn Super Foods has several blends of superfoods. Today I will be using their ultra bright Pink Pitaya Powder. As I mentioned before superfoods are just foods that contain a large amount of nutritional properties, in this case pink pitaya or also kwon as dragon fruit. This beautiful exotic pink fruit can be really hard to find in East coast of the United States, which is why I think it is amazing that we can find superfoods like this one in powder form to add to our daily nutrition, even during the hostil winter. 

If you are lucky enough to find a juicy, ripe dragon fruit in the supermarket, I suggest you take it home!

  • If for some reason you can't purchase Unicornsuperfoods at the moment, you can simply freeze some berries and blend them with the bananas. That mixture will also provide you with plenty of vitamins and antioxidants. The point here is to put your creativity to work , by adding extra superfoods to your daily diet.
